What criteria outside of Athletics Division/Association should a prospective Student-Athlete and their family consider when choosing a college?
As an advisor and trusted friend to families going through the college sports recruiting process, I always make sure my PrepSearch clients are fully educated on the entire process. An important component often left out or shortchanged during the recruiting process by some Advisors, IEC’s and Recruiting services is what should be considered outside all things athletically related. Over the nearly 20 plus years I’ve been helping families with the recruiting process I have developed a list of criteria that I recommend for all PrepSearch clients.
Criteria families should consider when choosing a college with their prospective student-Athlete.
When choosing a college, prospective student-athletes should carefully consider the academic programs and majors offered by the institution. It’s important to select a school that provides strong academic opportunities in the area of interest, ensuring there’s room to balance the demands of athletics with the pursuit of academic goals. In addition to the specific programs available, the academic reputation of the college plays a key role in determining the value of the degree earned. A school known for academic excellence can open doors to future opportunities, whether in sports or other career paths.
Graduation rates for student-athletes are also a crucial consideration, as these rates indicate how well the school supports athletes in completing their degree programs. It’s important to evaluate both four- and five-year graduation plans to ensure the institution offers the necessary resources and support to help student-athletes successfully finish their degrees despite the challenges posed by athletic schedules. Additionally, the availability of online courses can provide essential flexibility for student-athletes, allowing them to manage their time effectively and maintain a balance between sports and academics. A low four and five year graduation rate could be cause for concern as families and students are evaluating their college options.
The size and enrollment of a college or university can significantly influence the student-athlete experience. Larger schools may offer a broader range of academic programs and extracurricular activities, but the environment might feel less personal. Smaller colleges can provide more individualized attention and a close-knit community, which some athletes may find more conducive to personal growth. The location and setting of the college, whether urban, suburban, or rural, will also affect the overall experience. This includes considerations such as climate, proximity to home, access to internships, and the availability of off-campus activities.
Housing options should also be taken into account, as on-campus dorms or off-campus living arrangements can impact comfort and convenience. Colleges that offer housing specifically for athletes or that are located near key resources can provide added convenience for busy student-athletes. Transportation is another factor to consider, as ease of access to reliable transportation, whether through shuttle services or proximity to public transit, can help student-athletes balance their athletic and academic commitments.
The quality of classrooms and learning environments is also essential. A college should provide modern classroom facilities equipped with the latest technology to support learning. Small class sizes and a low student-to-professor ratio can foster more personalized attention, which is especially valuable for student-athletes who need academic support while managing their time with sports. Similarly, athletic facilities are an important consideration, as they directly affect training, recovery, and performance. High-quality athletic facilities, such as gyms, practice fields, and specialized recovery spaces, are vital for athletes aiming to excel in their sports. Post covid having students attend an actual class occurs less frequently. I really think this is a great experience if a student has an opportunity to sit in on a class during a visit.
Dining options on and near campus should not be overlooked. Access to nutritious, convenient meals is critical for student-athletes who need to fuel their bodies properly. Colleges with dining services that cater to specific dietary needs (such as vegan or gluten-free options) provide a significant benefit, as does the availability of nearby off-campus dining options.
The coaching staff and the overall team environment are integral to a student-athlete’s experience. A supportive and experienced coaching staff can significantly impact an athlete’s development, not just athletically but also personally and academically. It’s essential for student-athletes to have a strong relationship with their coaches and teammates, as these relationships can affect motivation, teamwork, and success. In addition to athletics, social and cultural opportunities on campus, such as Greek life, student clubs, or part-time employment, are also worth considering. Engaging in extracurricular activities outside of sports helps foster a well-rounded college experience and maintain a healthy balance between athletics, academics, and personal life. If your student has an interest in Greek life, I strongly suggest you mention this during the recruiting process to see how the head coach feels about it so there are no surprises later on. I have seen some ugly scenarios where a student pledged a Fraternity/Sorority and their coach wasn’t on board.
All of these factors together create the college environment for student-athletes, influencing their success, well-being, and overall college experience. By carefully weighing these aspects, student-athletes can make an informed decision that aligns with their academic and athletic goals, ensuring they thrive both on and off the field.
